(Couldn’t think of a title that makes sense!)
I have a newish BMW with full ETC integration. It’s very impressive and works brilliantly. It has some automatic modes where generally the navigation map is on the left and Expressway map and congestion on the right.
However, occasionally (ie. after a long drive and back on Tokyo Expressways) it sometimes beeps and the right hand pane shows a black and white photograph of .. “something” that stays for about 3 seconds. I can’t figure out what this is (blurry and hazy) but it could be a car in a tunnel.
I’m wondering if I have tripped a speed camera and it’s a picture of my car that they’re sending me in real time.
Can someone enlighten me please?
(And if I’m correct, what does this mean in terms of fine/ points / educational courses? Have only had my Japanese licence a few months and it’s all still new)

etc 2.0 sometimes transmits a shitty picture from a highway cameras so that you can take a look at traffic around that location. basically “almost real-time” traffic view.
they also sometimes send congestion maps, layout of a parking area when you pull into one, and other similar map-like data.
don’t worry, it’s not speed camera images.
Are you crossing prefectures? Some navis will show a notice and some sort of image about the prefecture when you cross the border.
I also own a bmw and I also get those photos. As people said, it’s the expressway camera showing the traffic. In case you trigger a speed camera, you will see a red flash light and it won’t show up on navi

you would probably receive this kind of picture via fax, Japan’s government is not there yet
