Health insurance between jobs?

Will be leaving my old job and start a new job. The timeframe would be a around week; do I need to return my old social insurance card to my previous job and enroll in national health insurance until I start my new job? I plan to ask my new job about it but wanted to hear about anyone’s experiences?

  1. In theory yes you’re supposed to. When I switched last time I was between insurances for three weeks, even had a doctors appointment then as well, told them the situation and they just told me to bring in my new card next time and they’ll update the billing.

  2. Yes. This is why many people make an effort to not leave a gap in employment.

And no, you can’t get around paying. They’ll eventually find out and bill you for that time.

  3. Yes, you return the old card to your former employer, enroll national health insurance. When you get the new job and start new social insurance, remember to let the city hall know so they can send you the envelop with the instruction to cancel national health insurance (often just send back the national health insurance card, copy of your social insurance card, copy of your ID). After that they will calculate again your insurance fee and send you the details. If you overpaid, they will refund, or send demand letter if you miss some bills in the process of changing jobs.

  4. Often you can apply to prolong your current health insurance, however you will be paying for it during that time. The sum will be usually comparable to the national insurance, but can be a bit larger.

Usually you can prolong your health insurance like this up to two years after quitting your job if I am not mistaken.
