Japanese recipes and cooking resources

こんにちは皆さん

I’m looking for Japanese recipes and general info about Japanese cuisine. Can anyone recommend a good website or ebook? Something written in Japanese, because I’m practicing my reading as well.

  1. For recipes: cookpad.com/jp

As for the info about cuisine, I made a few podcast episodes about dishes like nabe, ramen or curry rice, but they are in english.
Try to google your favourite dish in Japanese and you’ll be overwhelmed by the number of easy to read and understand articles about it. YouTube can also be your friend: type ○○の歴史 and enjoy 🙂 As a bonus videos often have Japanese subtitles so you can practice your kanji.

  2. I highly recommend Japanese cookbooks. I get mine from Amazon Japan, but occasionally I get them from Amazon USA (depends which is cheaper after I factor shipping/taxes).

I’ve got a couple of cooking manga that were interesting and great as entry-level Japanese reading, a book on how to make healthy bentos, and a year ago I bought a couple of candy making books. This was one of them: [プロのためのわかりやすい和菓子](https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/gp/product/4388060003?language=ja_JP) (ぷのためのわかりやすいわがし・Easy-to-Understand Japanese Sweets for Professiosals). This is more geared towards someone with experience in candy making. I also want to add some books on 漬物 (つけもの・pickles).

Edit: Bookwalker is also my preferred place to get Japanese ebooks. They have both a global and Japanese (one login for both). Make sure to use the Japanese side for Japanese language books. Most of my cookbooks are physical books, but I do have a couple of ebooks too.

  3. Harumi Kurihara’s Japanese books were quite popular here in Hawaii a few years back, and I know she still does collaborations with some businesses here. She has cookbooks in English and Japanese and I’ve found her recipes to be quite delicious. The English-language book of hers that I bought explains the essence of Japanese cuisine (the ingredients, flavors, etc.) in a way that struck me in particular as someone who belongs to the diaspora.

In addition, a cursory search led me to the recipe section of her website: [https://www.yutori.co.jp/shop/rpc/rpc0/](https://www.yutori.co.jp/shop/rpc/rpc0/)

    Bon appétit !

Edit: I forgot to mention that some (including Christian Science Monitor) have described Harumi K as “the Martha Stewart of Japan” – [https://www.csmonitor.com/1997/1210/121097.feat.feat.3.html](https://www.csmonitor.com/1997/1210/121097.feat.feat.3.html)

  4. Direct book recommandation, 基本のきちんと和食 by 市瀬悦子 (いちせ えつこ), ISBN978-4-07-401510-8. It assumes you don’t know much about cooking and goes trough how to make typical dishes for dinner. It has good reviews on Amzon JP. I bought it together with some other cookbooks and this is my favourite.

For website I recommend [oisiso.com](https://oisiso.com). The explanation are very throughout and taste delicious when made up.
