moved my car, now what?

hello, recently moved to Tokyo from another prefecture, finally brought my car over(left it at monthly rental space in other prefecture until I was settled)

apartment has parking, so that’s no issue. know I probably need to update “shako-shomei” but don’t know where to begin. what else do I need to update and where do I do it?

first time car owner, and don’t want to be delinquent on registering stuff or paying taxes. dealer did everything including insurance on my behalf when i bought the car.

  1. You have to register the new parking spot at the police station to get a 自動車保管場所証明書 (Jidousha hokenbasho shoumeisho) For that you need to:

    1. fill in forms specifying the details of your car, where your parking spot is and drawing a little sketch to show how big the parking spot it is. If you are renting, you need a paper from your landlord/owner of the parking spot as proof your are allowed to use the spot. (保管場所使用権原疎明書面 Hokanbasho no shiyoukengensomeishomen).

    2. About a week later, you can pick up your confirmation called and a sticker at the police station. (They check your parking spot is legit/big enough etc).

    3. Using the papers you get from the police station, you can now go to the motor vehicle registration with a new juuminhyou and money and change your address on the Shakensho.

If you have a my number card, I think you can now do the above online, but only if you do it all together (can’t only get the certificate or only change your shakensho, I think).

Edit: Filling in the forms for 1. is honestly quite exhausting, but if you’re lucky the guys at the police station are nice and tell you when something is wrong.

  2. Shako shomei is registered at the local police office(not sure if a koban works, probably not). If you google it you can get the docs in advance so you can prep them and just bring ‘em over

  3. I would ask the apartment building what you need for parking first before you do anything.. in Kansai once you register it the first time with the police.. you don’t need your do it if you move

  4. I don’t have anything valuable to add other than, from the title, I kind of hoped this would be the counter post from the other thread where the OP has moved his car from the other guys space.
