Cyber security/CSIO/CIO jobs as EXPATs to Japan

Hello everyone! Hope y’all are having a wonderful day and that I’m posting in the right sub. I’m an Asian-American married male looking for some future advice/mentorship in the cyber security/Information Systems realms that would allow me to either EXPAT to Japan, or conduct 1-3 months long trips to Japan.

I’ll have been in the service as an officer for about 10 years when I plan to get out, with intermediate level cyber certifications (CISSP/PMP) and mid-to-higher end leadership experience in the IT/Cyber roles. I am about N4 level in Japanese, hoping to be around N3 when I leave AD in a year and a half. I’m more than willing to pay for classes/tutors to increase my level before I go as well. I’d like to work in Southern California when I am in American, but open to most places in California.

Would anyone be able to offer me any advice on companies/opportunities that could let me travel to Japan frequently or even stay there. I’m not too picky about locations in Japan but I figured big cities are where most of the jobs are, and I’m not picky about which industry (like tech, medical, financial). Any advice would be really helpful, thank you everyone!

  2. I work at an international company with lots of international travel.

Before covid, travel was common. After covid everyone learned how to do their jobs without meeting face-to-face. These types of opportunities are rare. That being said, if you want to increase your probability to be able to land a role like this:

    1. Join an international company with a large presence in Japan.
    2. Be great at what you do
    3. Learn Japanese, not just earning N1, but be able to converse fluidly.
    4. Learn who works in the JP branch and build relationships with them. Be the person they go to when they need help from the home office.
    5. Take a vacation in Japan. Meet with the JP branch people.

If you do this, you will be recognized by both the JP branch and the US branch as the person to go to whenever travel to JP is required.
