Semester in Japan, but my university has no cooperations with any uni in Japan

My italian university has no exchange programs for going a semester or a year to Japan(they had a deal but it ended in 2021/22) with my course(computer science, bachelor degree), only options are in Europe with erasmus but I’m not interested in them.

I’ve read somewhere that it “could” be possible to move there a semester as a free-mover, but it would cost quite some money and my uni wouldn’t probably accepts the courses I’d take there. Are there any options I’m not aware of?

  2. Not really, unfortunately. At least, not if you want any of those classes to count for your current degree.

The only realistic option for you that may or may not be available would be to find a Japanese university that allows short-term exchange, offers the types of classes you still need credit for, get the course syllabi for each course, figure out the equivalent class at your home university, and take the syllabi to the head of the relevant department that oversees that class to see if they’re willing to attest that the content of the class is equivalent. You might be able to work with the registrar’s office at your university to articulate the courses individually but it might require permission from the heads of those departments too. Of course, you’d have to arrange 100% of your studies, enrollment, credit articulation, and absolutely everything yourself. There is no guarantee that your university will allow this but it’s the only way I know of for you to try to get credit.

If you’re okay with not getting credit, there are study abroad agencies in Japan, some of whom deal with inbound students. You can also look for study abroad agencies in Italy that might have partnerships with Japanese universities.

Overall, though, if the first option I listed doesn’t work then I don’t recommend trying to force it. I wish you the best of luck!
