Surface Mail Delivery Times from Japan to China

I just dropped off a large package at Japan Post for surface mail delivery to China (to a medium-sized city, not a big center like Shanghai or Beijing). The post office clerk told me the delivery time would be “one to three months” which is a really large window!

Has anyone recently sent a package to China? How much time did it take for you?

Next time I’ll use the “SAL” option, which seems to be the best overall value for cost vs. time

  1. When I asked about delivery of a 130g postcard to southeast Asia, I was told no chance it would arrive this year (I went with airmail instead) so I’m guessing their 1-3 month estimate is probably correct.

  2. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about packages straight up never arriving via surface mail. I’m currently in the process of moving back to Canada and I’m having some of my things sent ahead of me. Airmail is so freaking expensive but I don’t want to risk my stuff being lost to the ether
