[I found this old post on the sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/JETProgramme/comments/7yj7p3/startup_costs_flowchart/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) and thought it was a great help and might be appreciated by some other incoming JETs as well. I’m not sure how to repost since I can’t technically cross-post to the same sub, so I hope this will suffice. I’m linking to the post rather than just the pic because the comments are also helpful!
Keep in mind that this post was made 5 years ago, so it may be a bit outdated, but I imagine it’s still a pretty good guideline. Especially the ESID part at the end, lol.
Thank you u/Agent_Goldfish! ^((If this is against sub rules, feel free to remove.))

I think the idea is good but I have small nitpicks or info for incoming JETs this year. I think almost all (like 99%) places these days come with AC and even if they didn’t your CO would probably cover that for you, unless you live in Hokkaido and even then.
$500 for washing machine is unheard of, with $500 at your local secondhand store you can get your washing machine, fridge, microwave, electric kettle, etc and still probably have some left over. And all of them will be in like pristine condition lol
Especially with the exchange rate now, I think the old recommended amount makes a return with AT LEAST $2000 USD but closer to 3 as much as you can. Iirc I arrived a little after that post and even when the exchange rate was 1 to 100, I came over with only $1900 and finished with ¥20,000 before the next paycheck (I went out a lot and ate out a lot the first month though). I didn’t have to pay key money or any upfront money, but no subsidies of any kind.
Im mostly saying this because if past me saw that post I probably would have shit bricks seeing $1500 for AC and a washing machine lol
I also want to mention that since corona, Your pred might leave you stuff, but because of the rules in certain areas, its not gonna be stuff like a bed or couches. I know in my area, they are pretty adamant that if it does not have the schools name on it (yes, they went around with sharpie and wrote on all the schools stuff) Then it has to be out of the house when you leave.
FOR PEOPLE READING THIS, THE WAY AROUND THIS IS TO LEAVE STUFF WITH A FRIEND. Don’t impose, but leaving stuff with a friend to give to the new ALT is good for two reasons. the first is giving the stuff. second is meeting a potential new friend.
Thanks! I read thru this and it helps a lot!
