Can I get unemployment benefits for the few months I was unemployed before visiting Hello Work?

My job’s contract ended in August but I haven’t been to Hello Work since then for various reasons. If I went to their office this week, would I be entitled to benefits from August to November? I’m assuming not and that I’m SOL. I’m on a spouse visa, btw.

  1. Yes I believe you would still be able to claim it!

The unemployment benefits applies for a maximum of one year.

So once, I quit a job on july 2019, and found other job at travel company shortly after, then had to quit again may 2020 due to pandemic. (The travel company didn’t provide unemployment benefit), so I went to hellowork using the ones from my old company, and they said I’m still eligible to get it until july’20. (When I claimed, it’s already june, so I got about one month of unemployment benefit)

  2. No, the payments start from when you go to register at Hello Work + a cool down period depending on the reason for being out of work.

As the other commenter said, you can get the benefits up until one year after you lost your job (in general), so register as soon as possible. You can’t get it retroactively, but you should utilize what you can.

  3. Hello, just wondering, a contract simply ending counts for unemployment? Or is there more to this?

    Thank you.
