Planning to Leave While Visa Processing

Hello everyone!

I am graduating (finally) in December 2023 and am planning to transition to my 特定活動 Visa (I have all the necessary documents and my school has been helping as well).
My current student visa is valid until February 2024 but I want to begin the application process ASAP.

I plan to give all of these documents around the second week of December and then fly out of Japan during New Year for just a week to see family again before coming back and continuing job hunting.

Is this okay? Would I be stopped at immigration for not being a student anymore? If I don’t submit, fly out, and return in January would I be denied entry? Can I travel while I have visa processing ongoing? Any advice and experience would really help. Happy Holidays!

  1. Just ask your immigration office? They’re not inhuman, they’re not out to punish you. I’m sure they can tell you if you can or not.

  2. Your visa is only valid for 30 days after you graduate. You should submit the documents as soon as you can and ask at immigration about traveling.

  3. I traveled while I had a visa change processing (changing from student to dependent), so it definitely can be an option. call immigration to ask if it’s the same with student to 特定活動 as well! (I got my confirmation by calling too. they’ve always been quite nice to me on the phone, and v helpful.)
