I’m on a humanities working visa in Japan and my zairyu card is good till next March. My passport is expiring next April. I can get the paperwork to renew my zairyu card from my company so that isn’t a issue. My main issue is would I be able to renew my zairyu card in March if my passport is expiring in April ? I’m not sure if their is a certain amount of time I need for my passport in order to renew my zairyu card? I hear so many mix things about passport renewal aboard to, if I have to get a new passport ASAP I will go to my embassy ( US embassy ) this week.

You need a new passport, and prove the change to the immigration. Get it asap, as the immigration will most likely not renew a visa on an expiring passport.
If you’re a US citizen, you can renew online, easier than going to the embassy. Took me about 2 weeks a few months ago, but I was in a hurry due to a business trip to Europe. Now I have one of those new fangled plastic passports
