Does passport expiry matter for visa renewal?

My passport expires in September next year.
My visa renewal is due before April.

So I’ll be able to apply for a new visa before the passport expires. Just wondering if the expiry date matters for the visa application. I can go through the process to get the passport renewed now, but I already have a trip home planned for Golden Week and would prefer to get the process underway there instead. 😄

Thanks all

  1. Nope it doesn’t, you’ll be fine.

Edited to add: you do need to be careful about your trip however, as passport validity of under 6 months remaining may get you denied boarding with some airlines.

  2. Not sure if it’s still the case but they didn’t used to require a valid passport for renewal of PR and I think SLTR LTR, and spouse. They just used it as a form of ID so an expired copy was fine.

Not sure if that’s still the case though. Would be interesting to find out because honestly I don’t feel like dealing with the embassy and have no plans for international travel.

  3. You mean a SOR. A Japanese visa isn’t usually renewed, and it is linked to your passport in a way a residence card isn’t.
