I took a walk around the neighborhood on Saturday and passed by a cafe which had been closed for some time for a “renewal open”. My wife and I were hungry so we walked in to look at the menu. Big mistake. The previously expansive menu had been cut down to just two items – the weekly lunch and the plate special, both of which came with all you can eat bread and soup and, oh yeah, were about 600 yen more expensive than the average price of the previous menu.
No thanks. I don’t need that much food and I definitely don’t need to pay 1800 yen for something that used to cost 1000 yen. We walked out saddened to realize that the little neighborhood spot we used to go to was dead.
So, tip for any newbies here: don’t like anything. The seasonal ice cream at the convenience store will go away in a few weeks, the limited time snacks you bought once will be impossible to find again, the restaurants you like will someday undergo “renovation” and open up under shittier new conditions with new management, everything is built on quicksand and it’s only a matter of time.
Has anyone else noticed that Amazon Prime has basically become useless for weeks out of the year if you need anything quickly? Amazon is having “sales” multiple times a year now, with Prime Day and Black Friday, etc., which means delivery times get pushed right out. I tried to order something I needed in a hurry and can often get it the same day, except now they are saying Sunday at the earliest, and that’s not even a scheduled time. Just Sunday. I may as well go to the store to buy it, which is the reason I have Prime to avoid having to do that!
saw some people at the pool the other day bowing out of it like you would at a dojo. Is that a competitive sports thing?
My lower back. It hurts *every single* damn morning when I wake up. It’s the same IKEA foam mattress I’ve been using back since 2020 and I never had back pain until a month ago. Tried sleeping on a futon on a floor (firm), still painful. Tried a memory foam mattress topper (soft), still painful. Tried going to a massage/seitai place, next morning, still painful. What gives??? I know after the age of 25 we get one random debuff every year but this ain’t it.
The pain goes away naturally 30-45 mins after waking up, so I’m still suspecting it’s a bed/mattress problem. Should I just dump 40,000 yen on a spring mattress? My semiannual bonus comes next week so I’m ready to pull the trigger, but what if I did and it doesn’t fix the pain?

Well…I guess I’ll get the ball rolling this week.
