Recommendations for Wi-Fi router to put between provider’s router and home network

After reading an article recently on securing home networks, I’d like to buy a Wi-Fi router that is fairly easy to administer that sits between my provider’s equipment and my home network. It might be a router that I can try and put pfsense on.

Any recommendations?

I’m asking this here rather than a more techy place because of availability of equipment here.

Edit: By the way, this is the guide I’m using: https://media.defense.gov/2023/Feb/22/2003165170/-1/-1/0/CSI\_BEST\_PRACTICS\_FOR\_SECURING\_YOUR\_HOME\_NETWORK.PDF

Those 2 sentences are a little at odds. AFAIK pfsense can not be installed on any brand name soho router, it requires basically a PC or an enterprise router.

  2. How big is your place…. is one unit right alongside the provider’s modem enough, or do you need some mesh units?

Things to watch out for when surveying what’s available:
Can you give separate names to the 2 and 5GHz access points? (It’s best if you can; some IoT things get confused when both use the same name.)

Can you administer it without creating an account in the cloud? Sadly, lots of companies now make you create an account in their cloud, just to administer your local hardware. It’s infuriating.

  3. that’s a lot of words to say “i want a wireless ap”

not really sure what would be the benefit of double nat or whatever you’d end up with if you added a “second” router.

  4. I use a Netgear Orbi mesh system with Netgear Armor by Bitdefender installed for added security. We have a fairly large house so we have the main Orbi router downstairs and an Orbi satellite upstairs to extend the wifi range. I have the NTT modem/router in bridge mode with the Orbi doing all of the routing, both IPv4 and IPv6.
