Living/working in Nagoya for 2 months, what should I know going in?

Hello!

I’m an American who recently got an opportunity through a cultural exchange program to live and work at a hostel in Nagoya for two months starting in January. I will only be working ~20 hours a week so I’ll have lots of free time to spend in the city and sometimes nearby cities.

I know virtually no Japanese but I just started using renshuu to teach me. Besides that, are there some non-obvious things about life in Japan (or Nagoya specifically) that I can prepare for on the trip? Things that I should know to do/not do as a foreign visitor? Small or lesser-known things I can only do/get in Japan?

I’m very excited to explore everything!
