Places to bring foldable bike (by train)

I just bought a foldable bicycle and while it’s fun to bomb around the local neighborhood, I’d like to fold it up and head out to some more rural places. Any recommendations for towns/places reachable by train that are fun to explore by bike (maybe somewhere to get some nice food, ride around a park or hop in the onsen?).
I’m in Tokyo, so hoping for some Kanto recommendations, but we can open the thread to any region if you have some good recommendations for others.

  1. Kawagoe if you don’t live closeby or if you have more stamina, a trip to lake kawaguchiko is really good experiences.

And if you have even moreee stamina, go to all lakes around mount Fuji

  2. I took my foldable with me, on the highway bus, to Nagano and explored the country side around it. This was a lot of fun.

  3. Why do Kanto people post local stuff in Japanlife instead of the Tokyo sub? Not angry, just curious. I was going to make local suggestions then…oh.

  4. Chiba has some good scenery I’ve heard. I managed to miss all of it when I worked there though.

  5. I rode around Kasumigaura last weekend, there’s a pretty nice cycle route set up there.

Tama Lake is smaller and closer and has a similar setup.

IMO the Shimanami Kaido is overrated, but around Shikoku is glorious; that would be a week or two’s trip though. (I took the overnight ferry from Tokyo when I did it).

If you go out to Odawara then down the peninsula to Ito is pretty nice, lots of motorbikes on that road though. Around the Boso peninsula can be nice too.

I rode through a beautiful valley in Ibaraki once, possibly Hananuki Gorge?

The road from Sagamihara out up to lake Yamanako is pretty and has good views of Fuji, they used it for the Olympic cycling race.
