Working for a US company remotely as a second job

Hey all,

So I’m living and working Japan under and instructor visa but I’ve got an opportunity to work remotely for an American company (likely as a contractor).

Any idea about liabilities tax, legal, or otherwise? I looked around and found some stuff but nothing specific to my situation.

  1. Two ways to do this “easily”

Option 1.) Register a sole proprietorship and have them hire that entity – then you pay yourself from what the proprietorship earns. You’ll need to do your taxes in Japan manually, but so long as you don’t go over the $140k or whatever it is in earnings, you still just use the FEIE for filing in the US.

Option 2.) Find one of those local companies in Japan that act as the intermediary between overseas companies with no JP office presence and local workers, and have them hire you. US company contracts the work out through them. That would likely result in a decrease in pay, though, since the intermediary is performing clerical / administrative duties. It’s pretty set and forget though.
