Tokyo Dev 2023 Survey results

Didn’t see this get posted yet so if it had I’ll take this down.

I always find this survey really interesting every year because I have been studying to switch to a web developer career.

Sad to see WFH is disappearing.

Any takeaways or thoughts?

Not sure if links are gonna get this banned so just google “2023 tokyo dev survey result”.

  1. I don’t think you can extrapolate a downward trend in WFH to say it will disappear. I think it will hit a floor, much higher than prior to COVID, and then gradually grow.

Anecdotally, some tech companies in Japan (mine included) are offering WFH to attract higher-quality candidates, and have completely reorganized their offices and work culture to the point where going back would be a massive effort.

  2. Thanks for sharing it! I actually just posted a reddit ad for the results, so you’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the next couple days.

One thing we added to this year’s survey was tracking the source of respondents, and also the ability to create custom charts.

Reddit respondents were outliers in terms of having exceptionally high compensation compared to other sources, with a median compensation of ¥10 million compared to the overall median of ¥8.5 million.

Woah, you took a big risk by telling people what to search. Glad it didn’t get you banned for life (yet).

  4. According to the survey, more than 9% of people are earning more than 20 million. Therefore I can’t believe anything else in the survey.
