So had a talk about this in another thread but wanted to make a new thread that was easily searchable.
If you’re like me and wanting to change jobs, timing is key.
I want to make sure I have everything right.
I’m currently 正社員 trying to go to another 正社員 position at a new company.
If I understand correctly, it’s best to have your last working day at the last day of the month and the first day of your new job in the first day of the following months.
Example: last day Thursday, Nov 30th. First day December 1st.
If there any gaps (including weekends?) you need to go to the city office and switch to NHI and pension.
社会保険 is billed on the last day of the month so the pay is get in December would be from my previous employer with shakai hoken all paid for.
What happens if the last day falls on a Friday and your first day is the following Monday? Would your new company simply say that you started on Saturday so that insurance doesn’t get all wonky?
Anyone with experience outside of the ideal situation?

Your previous company should pay your insurance for the full month as long as you have worked most of the month – be careful though as it’s not a legal requirement. I put my last day as the 29th as it was Friday and not Saturday the 30th so my company didn’t pay it. Black much? Your new company should also pay the full following month even if there’s a small gap. That has been my experience.
I should add because my company didn’t pay for my last month I had to manually pay the pension for that month.
Weird, I read the information online and I think they said that you don’t need to notify the city as long as it is within 14 days.
You don’t need to be continuously covered by private insurance. It’s okay to have small gaps, you only have to pay NHI if you don’t have other insurance on the last day of the month. You also don’t need to register at the ward office to be covered by NHI, you can register retroactively (I think it’s two weeks? but don’t quote me on that.) if you end up needing your coverage.
