Places to meet other foreigners/travelers in Aomori, Iwate, or Akita Prefecture

What the title says. Are there any places, like hostels, where foreigners come and go regularly, in these prefectures? I’m an american stationed at Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture and am trying to meet other people not military. It seems that all the places like what I’m searching for are in the large cities down south. I’m not trying to spend 300$ every weekend to take a shikansen down to Tokyo.

So far I found a guesthouse in Sendai which isn’t bad but I’m still looking for any closer options.

  1. Not sure about guesthouses etc, but Sundance in Morioka, Iwate is the place most foreigners congregate. Never been but it’s always a place that I hear people say “Oh, I met you at Sundance!”

  2. I’m in Iwate, near Morioka. It’s a great town. Lots of cool little shops, more foreigners than you might think. No hostels, but plenty of affordable hotels! u/Snuckerpooks already mentioned Sundance. Aeron Standard is another great place, or [Yorozu](https://maps.app.goo.gl/9FwYvJWH8LdpmqLT9) is a wonderful izakaya if that is your vie.

If you ski or snowboard, Appi has a lot of foreign visitors from your base, from the nearby international school and as tourists. You’d be surprised how many foreign faces you see on the slopes.

  3. How do you like Misawa area?

I’m in yokosuka and i love it down here. I’m hoping i can stay here, but I’m not sure if i can live so far away from the city life if i get assigned to Misawa.

  4. I live in Akita (closer to Aomori than Akita) and there’s a ton of foreigners in Akita and Aomori (thank you AIU and JET ). Try to go to the international events and festivals that happen (if you google Akita/Aomori festivals), I always meet foreigners at these places.
