I’m trying to find an American movie to show during my last day of class before summer break to teach my students a part of my culture. Any suggestions?
A TV episode would be more appropriate, unless your class is close to 2 hours long.
Something from Peanuts? The apple videos can do Japanese subtitles.
Age group would be nice.
My school teachers always thought we’d want to watch Angels in the Outfield or Lion King
Tiny Toons How I Spent My Summer Vacation
Perhaps Home Alone? Maybe a Disney movie?
Anything muppets
Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure. Japanese 12 year old boys need to be acquainted with Missy.
A summer classic: “Jaws”
A Goofy movie!
High School Musical never misses
Lost Boys
Stand by me
Elephant.
Cool Runnings
Sandlot kids.
School of Rock
E.T. It is a pretty easy movie to follow.
The goonies
The goonies
The English versions of various Disney Classics, like “Cinderella” and “Lady and the Tramp”.
Gru or something like that, for some reason Minions here are super popular to the point Bape makes Minion designed clothes lol
Not necessarily cultural per se, but my class in Taiwan watched Wall-E. It’s easy to understand as it has very little dialogue.
Surf Ninjas
Shrek 2
The Godfather I and II. III was not really good, so I would not recommend it.
Breakfast Club
Not American but I showed my kids Wallace and Gromit today and they loved it
Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
Dazed and Confused
Napoleon dynamite
American Tail
Sandlot. Baseball is received well there
I’d have said Back to the Future if it wasn’t already showing dubbed on TV atm.
Robbin Williams movies are always great and felt somewhat American to me as a British viewer:
Jumanji, Jack, Mrs. Doubtfire, Flubber etc.
Edit: Ace Ventura, Dr. Dotlittle and The Nutty Professor are also classics, although having googled the latter it seems there might be inappropriate themes for kids.
Team America
Normally go with John Waters and tell them Divine is the American Matsuko deluxe
