So, finally preparing to exit Japan 🙂
Putting together some documents that might help in new location and have a few questions:
1) credit report, I’ve requested one from 全国銀行協会 via net, any reason to request one from
CIC as well or will the info be the same?
2) bank documents to show funds, what would one ask the bank for? Request an “official” bank statement or such?
3) I’ve requested driving records/no incident record from 自動車安全運転センター , I just want to confirm this is what would show no-claim record as the car insurance company said they don’t gave these records (or at least don’t have anything like this to provide)
Did I hear correctly that international post stamps for postcards are now ¥100?
Asking all the weebs here. My husband and I are expecting a baby boy early next year and have been thinking about names. We really like the name Levi but my husband thinks people will think we got it from 進撃の巨人 Attack on Titan. I don’t really mind Japanese people thinking that (there are more unfortunate names like デーブ and デブラ out there), but he thinks when the kid goes overseas, because his surname will be Japanese, they will think “ah, Attack on Titan” I told him it’s a very popular name in English but now I’m not sure. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Levi Tanaka?
ETA: it will be his middle name! Thanks for those who pointed out the ijime and it being hard to pronounce in J 🙂
From what I’ve looked at, the most popular providers of tsumitate NISA (both old and new) like SBI and Rakuten don’t allow you to hold the account if you move overseas for any period of time, even if you intend to come back to Japan and despite the fact that it’s legal to do so (as per: [https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/otekomachi/20230626-OYT8T50117/](https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/otekomachi/20230626-OYT8T50117/))
Nomura Securities seems to be the only broker that allows for this at the moment, but is the fact that you have to close your account, even if leaving Japan to work somewhere else temporarily a non-issue for most people here?
I’m very confused reading the pudo station at 7/11 services. It doesn’t give me a clear answer of whether i can ship directly to another pudo station. I want to send a small package to a sensei of mine who I see online who lives in yokohama but they prefer to keep their address private for good reasons.
I don’t have Line for them to as I want to directly ship to the locker. the site here just mentions anon shipping via line, who again most likely would like to keep their line private. I can ship from an office but not seem to choose it as a option to ship to

I’m not sure if there are better options available that i don’t know about.
Not a big fan of pork; any of the usual ramen chains provide a chicken-based ramen? I know there’s some fancy spots in Tokyo that do it, but would be nice if just a local neighborhood spot also offered it.
If I’m going to register seal for yucho, does it need to be registered beforehand at the city hall or can I just use my personal seal?
Any good book recommendations for someone studying N3 that are available on the kindle?
Wanna add that I’m thinking about getting Kino’s journey. It has a lot of kanji I don’t know but kindle has a nice feature that brings up the furigana
The men’s Japanese sizes have the tiniest cuts around the chest and armpits, Does anyone know where to find American sizes men’s t shirts????
Has anyone seen towels with cherry blossom or other “Japan” designs around? My mom requested one.
I’m not in Tokyo so has anyone seen them around in the chain stores like Aeon, Komeri, Nitori, or Athena?
I may be panicking but WHERE is the merucari help form? I can’t find customer service anywhere.
Have you even been told by your senpai not to smoke in front of your kouhai?
Senpai bonked me in person after it came out that I smoke. He didn’t care that I smoked, well, he did, but more since workplace reform/company doctors have been pushing for people to stop smoking, but he was adamant that I never smoke in front of my kouhai. What gives?
This cream has been doing wonders for my face! I feel much better with my red forehead all covered up. Anyone know where I can either buy this locally or a Japanese equivalent?

I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy note 20 and I want to get a J:com sim card. However, this phone is not listed in their Sim approved device lists. Is it any different?
Who should I notify of my new phone number? I’ve changed it in my bank account and that’s it.
Should I get driver’s license? I’m currently a student and I got time, and I don’t think it’ll be easy to attend a school once you start working. Thing is, it costs between 20-25 man, and I would like to get a motorcycle license 普通自動二輪車 eventually too so it might be 30-35 man. I’m in Kansai.
Any experiences with that? I don’t plan on getting a car but having the option to drive one needed would be great. Thanks!
an acquaintance told me that i can pay only 30% of the price of a medicine if i use my national health insurance card. i couldnt find much info on what condition this work. does it work with buying otc medicine at the pharmacy?
Are we legally allowed to defend ourselves in case we got attacked on public space? Of course my first choice is to run away from dangers.
But if I’m cornered and not on a situation of being ablento run away, am I allowed to defend myself by kicking the perpetrator?
Here’s a background.
Yesterday I rode train back home in Kanagawa. The train was fairly empty as there are some empty seats but not deserted. The train was very quiet. People minded their own business as usual on their phones.
Naturally there are business looking people and there was a salaryman like guy wearing a suit having a total meltdown (breakdown?). He suddenly screamed and dropped himself and his handbag(the typical salaryman’s?) To the ground and wailing like a kid throwing tantrum.
The woman sat next to him immediately stood and gtfo but then the man started get up mid screaming and followed her. She moved to a different car. The man did one lap of screaming from one door to another door(car separator).
The thing is the man sat literally in front of me. And I literally prepared to kick him on his nuts if he’d come nearby me or do anything to harm me.
Can I be legally charged if I kicked him? I legit feared for my life..
How long does it generally take to change apartments? My lease runs out next year in May and while I don’t mind my current place, I kinda feel like moving to a slightly better one. Just wondering how much I should anticipate.
About to buy a very new-looking secondhand bike on Mercari for about half what it costs new. The seller is a new account with no feedback, but the orange crime prevention sticker is clear in the photos and he says he’s got the 防犯譲渡書類. As long as that’s true I can be confident it’s not stolen, right?
While I was out shopping, I got stopped by a guy who said he called out because he thought I was pretty (I was wearing a mask though…). He asked for my LINE and a few things about myself (first name, age, nationality, school, current address (city only), if I lived alone, if I have/had a boyfriend). After showing me the store I wanted to go to, he left to (he claimed) go to his job in the area.
Was I wrong in giving him these information? Should I block his LINE? I can’t help but be paranoid, especially since he kept looking behind us when we were walking together. I’m aware of nanpa but he didn’t look or feel the part of those kinds of guys.
Is there a website I could see what emergency situations have happened nearby. Or alternatively, is there a reason like 5 different fire trucks, 2 ambulances and a police car parked outside my apartment even though I could not see smoke anywhere- That amount of vehicles kinda imply to me it would’ve been a major fire.
Well, the year isn’t even over yet and it seems I’m going to have to start my *third* job hunt now. Quit my first company because they tried to rope me into committing crimes, the next company hired me and then six weeks just fired everyone in the Kansai office, me included. Now my third company has also fallen on hard times and is failing to pay salary. I have the worst fucking luck with employers.
Thankfully I don’t have to worry about visa stuff, but jesus, how the hell do I give my situation a positive spin in interviews? “You quit three companies in 2023 – why?” is going to be a bitch of question to answer. I feel like just telling the truth might not be the wisest solution here, but I can’t think of a better one.
