One week spare for hiking

Hi guys, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am traveling Japan solo for two weeks now. Was in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka, Nara and am now in Kyoto. My stay there is slowly coming to an end. However, I still have one more week left on my JR Rail Pass. Initially, I planned going up to Sendai, Aomori and then to Sapporo, but many friends I made over the duration of my trip tried to talk me out of it. I was hoping to go for long hikes up north, but I am a bit reluctant now.
Are there any areas/regions/prefectures, where you can stay for a couple of days and then go on good hiking routes, even via bus or train? I was thinking of Gifu, Nagano.. but they are mostly ski areas right now.
Especially now in December, where there is a lot of snow.
Or should I rather visit the South and see other cities or visit Mt. Fuji, Mt. Takao and Yokohama?
Again, any help would be appreciated.

  1. Why did they talk you out of going north? I used Sendai as a homebase for a few days and want to go back to enjoy more of the city itself. Yamadera was a nice hike.

Last month I did the Hakuba Happo Pond hike. Not sure if there’s snow there now though.

  2. I’m a bit unclear. Are you asking if touhoku is nice to visit? Nice to hike in December? Better to go south if you want to hike? And what specifically do you mean by hike? Day hikes? Solo backpacking? Do you have winter hiking gear and winter hiking expertise?
