So after browsing the internet for a while, I’ve been getting mixed answers. Some claim that it doesn’t count at all and some say that any time you spend in Japan apart from tourism counts.
I saw a Russian guy on r /passportporn that obtained japanese passport after 6 years and he came for study.
So my question is, does your study time? Since Ill be applying to a Japanese uni, got accepted in a Japanese uni and hope to stay there, I want to know if I am eligible for citizenship after 5-6 years.

**Study time towards Citizenship**

Have a look at the nationality law here:
https://www.moj.go.jp/ENGLISH/information/tnl-01.html
One of the requirements is:
>that he or she is able to secure a livelihood by one’s own property or ability, or those of one’s spouse or other relatives with whom one lives on common living expenses
On a student visa you are restricted to part time work, which means you would not be able to satisfy this requirement. However the time still counts.
That being said, I wouldn’t recommend rushing into naturalization. It does require that you give up any foreign citizenships that you may already hold.
