Failed to notify immigration about change in education place

I graduated university in September, and started language school in October 10th. My student visa is until July next year. I didn’t know I was supposed to notify immigration about change of studying place.

Am I going to be deported? Did anyone have similar experience?
I will go to immigration bureau tomorrow.

  1. Technically you are violating the terms of your status of residence and should keep in mind that immigration may choose to have you deported. You should have changed status of residence between when you graduated and started studying at the language school.

You should go to immigration, be very, very sorry, explain your situation and hope they allow you to proceed with a status exchange, but don’t take it for granted.

  2. Just be honest with them and tell them you weren’t aware. Be very apologetic. Immigration can actually be very understanding of mistakes.

Expect for them to scold you though. And tell you not to do it again.

  3. When on a student visa l; Not notifying immigration within 14 days after you ending study at an educational institution, and then again within 14 days after the first day of a new educational institution is a violation of Article 19-16 (item 1) of the Immigration Control And Refugee act: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/applications/procedures/nyuukokukanri10_00014.html

In theory, it’s a violation of immigration law, so deportation *could* happen as result, especially as there is more scrutiny on student visas.

Now in reality will you get deported for not doing it within the required timeframe?… unlikely (as long as you’re abiding by all other laws etc)

So my advice is…. Do it now! As doing it late is better than not doing it at all. Because doing it late will likely result in just a slap on the wrist, where as not doing it and then getting discovered by immigration not to have done it will probably be worse

  4. I forgot to tell them I changed jobs once (under same visa type). Didnt even realise till they pointed it out. My employer never mentioned the need, and I just assumed it would updated at next renewal. They lol’d at me and told me to make sure I let them know next time.
