Advice on properly leaving Japan

I’ll be leaving Japan after having lived here for 4.5 years! Any helpful insights on all the things I have to take care of before exiting properly would be super helpful. Also, how did you get rid of all the things (pots, mattresses, carpets)

Thanks!

  1. Well, you’d need to go to the city hall and pay your residence taxes (can’t have those school teachers go unpaid, right?).
As for disposing waste, each city has a different system so again you’d need to check with the city office.

  2. for furniture/items you’d like to get rid of, try the sayonara sales groups on Facebook. there’s quite a few of them, and things get snatched up pretty quickly.

  3. Did it recently.

    Few things to line up.

Dispose off big items (can only be done on designated dates with advance booking so need to plan it well)

Leave before 31st Dec to avoid residence tax ( give move out notice with moving out date before 1st Jan)

Appoint someone as your tax representative (need to submit a form in tax office)

Fill up forms for claiming pension and hand over to someone who can post it after you leave (with 4.5 years , you can hope for a sizable payout even if you were part of national pension if you were working/ contributing to pension )
