For HSP visa application, does the employer need to be a Japan-based employer?

I’m changing visa and couldn’t seem to find this information by googling, but I have a very good job from overseas, but the employer is not based out of Japan. (I will be working remotely)

In the HSP point table it doesn’t seem to matter, but is a Japan based employer a requirement?

Thank you

  1. Your employer must be based locally to sponsor your visa, in other words, they need to have an entity in Japan. One option would be to have your new employer contract with an “EoR” (employer of record) provider who would take care of your employment contract, visa, payroll and benefits, etc.

  2. Yes. How else is your visa getting sponsored, unless you’re currently on the Artist, Journalist, Religious Activity etc visa?

  3. There is no digital nomad visa. Currently only Citizens, SPRs, Spouse visa holders, Designated visa holders and people with Permanent Residency can work remotely for an overseas company.

The HSPV program is designed to attract high level international talent to come and work **in Japan.** That means the sponsor **must** have an office here.

Now, if they have an office in Japan that you directly report to and are paid through, you can work remotely on a normal work visa.
