Japan is the world’s third largest coal importer and generates 28% of its electricity from it. It’s the second biggest source of Japanese electricity after natural gas. Altogether, fossil fuels accounted for 71% of Japan’s electricity in 2022.
So the article and the title are contradictory. He didn’t say they wouldn’t build new coal stations. He said they wouldn’t build new coal stations that weren’t doing carbon capture. Far from the same thing.
What a shitty, inaccurate, and misleading headline.
Spoiler: Japan did NOT say that they won’t build any new coal power stations.
Whole world needs more nuclear power plants.
