Any advice on transferring Yen to cryptocurrency?

I’m a crypto-newbie and this weekend I tried to purchase cryptocurrency (ETH) through Mercuryo, and then again through Trust wallet, but they both rejected my Japanese Bank’s VISA card. PayPal seems to be a no-go as well. Does anyone work with cryptocurrency here and is it compatible with the Japanese bank account system? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. /r/JapanFinance for questions about money and crypto.

If you’re American, expect it to be a massive PITA. If you’re non-American it’s slightly easier but still a pain.

Edit: Be aware that Japanese tax requirements for crypto are onerous and expensive.

  2. I bought bitcoin several years ago, and IIRC I used a bank transfer at one of my bank’s ATMs.

  3. If you live in Japan, you can open an account in Japanese crypto exchange like Coincheck, DMM Bitcoin, GMO, etc. We even have Binance Japan now.
You can transfer money from a Japanese bank to the exchange, buy ETH and transfer it to any wallet you like including Trust.

  4. If you open a Coincheck account you can deposit money through bank transfers and purchase it that way.

  5. Use one of the official exchanges in Japan like Coincheck and Bitflyer. Then you can buy it through bank transfer. Or use Kucoin and you can link up your visa card.

  6. In the past few years cryptocurrency has become a risky investment which has involved widespread corruption. In addition the mining of cryptocurrency is energy intensive and is contributing to global warming.
