Appointment for visa?

It says in the instructions to drop off the visa at your departure consulate. I was wondering if this requires a regular visa appointment or if you can just show up and drop off whenever (before the deadline). I have known of people having trouble with acquiring visas due to the consulate being fully booked for months, so I wanted to be sure.

  1. From my understanding, your consulate will inform you of how the drop off works. It might be a separate track entirely so you don’t have to make an appointment! I know you’ve probably heard this before but your best bet is to email your consulate specifically 😅

  2. I would email your consulate or double check any info they may have sent with your acceptance. Some may have different procedures for dropping off documents. My consulate (Seattle) requires us to schedule a drop off time in advance.

  3. My understanding was to wait until you get your placement info, then you talk to your Consulate.

    Although I could be wrong.

Also, I highly doubt the Consulate would just say “oops all appointments are booked. It looks like you can’t go!” We all gotta remember they want us to go. They will do everything they can to help if you ask and communicate clearly.

  4. As soon as I received the confirmation that I was moving from the shortlist to the main list, I contacted the consulate and coordinated everything I needed to do, including the date in which I could drop off my passport along with the necessary photos. I would suggest you to do the same.

  5. Everyone that I know who came over with JET just sent their passport into the JET coordinator, and it was all handled from there by the coordinator. No appointment is needed.

There are 2 major exceptions to this rule. The first is those who are currently living in Japan need to sort our their visa stuff on their own. The second is that dependants MAY be required to apply for their own visa, this is entirely up to how the Consulate wants to handle it as some will add dependants to the JET batch and process them with that.

You should be contacting your coordinator for these questions as they will have the most accurate and up-to-date information.

  6. I mailed mine maybe 2 months ahead to the consulate. But I lived about 6 hours away.
