Shakai Hoken – Counseling Questions

Hello everyone:

I hope everyone is hanging in there during this cold, cold weather.

I am weighing on possible options on finding a therapist to help me (not looking to be medicated, just someone to talk to and to help me guide), and for that, I was wondering if there are any possible counseling sites with a reasonably cheap price (preferably an English speaker / online). What I mean by cheap, is it any possible for Shakai Hoken (I am under Shakai Hoken) to cover some of the costs if it comes to finding an English therapist here in Japan? I have done some research that it doesn’t, but I just wanted to make sure before I try to find one in the US or somewhere outside of Japan. The internet does a very good job of not giving a straight answer from reliable sources, so I just wanted to know.

Much appreciated, here is to hope for what the best possible options are in the near future.

  1. Although there are some exceptions, personal counseling by a certified psychologist is generally not covered by insurance.

The purpose of counseling is to help clients organize their own minds and provide support for problem-solving by experts. For this reason, it is difficult to objectively demonstrate its effectiveness in numerical terms, so it is not covered by insurance.

Four conditions for counseling to be covered by insurance:

If you receive cognitive behavioral therapy by a doctor or nurse for a mood disorder such as depression.

If you receive outpatient or home psychotherapy for mental illness from a doctor

If you receive standard psychoanalytic therapy from a doctor

If you receive treatment for a specific mental illness or addiction, etc.
