For those who live in Sapporo or Hokkaido in general– when does it start to warm up again?

Asking so I can plan a budget for my kerosene tank refills– generally speaking from your experience, which month will no longer really require me to have it running?

TIA 🙂

  1. I’m down in Tohoku and for us, like April? Aha…just before whenever cherry blossom starts, really

  2. I ran my kerosene heater late November through late March up in Asahikawa. I think my last fills were usually in late February.

  3. Standard heating period in Hokkaido is November to April. For example, I rent a community center room, and have to pay a heating fee through those months. Ideally, by the end of April, you don’t need it

  4. Depends on how good your insulation is and how much you can endure a house that’s uncomfortably cold in the morning. I lived in a place with terrible insulation and if I was pushing myself to use the heater less, I feel like it was late October – March. If I was saying “fuck the heating bill” then early October – April ish. Maybe even a bit into May depending on the year. Though a lot of the early/late periods were just running it for an hour or 2 in the morning so I didn’t have to wake up to a cold house

  5. as someone from sapporo, we generally start heating either in november or december, depending on the weather and usually end heating around early april

  6. It starts to warm up in the second week of February, by which I mean, the skating rinks are slushy during the day by Valentine’s most year. If you have passive solar, it can make a big difference, but you’ll still need to use the heater every night until late March to early May, depending on the year. Depends on so much — solar collection, windows, insulation, your energy habits.

  7. Miyagi, generally keep two tanks on hand. Late March we cut it down to one, than half refills, and burning off any remaining fuel is done by around Golden Week.

  8. End of February it “warms up” and the ice starts to melt but I think if you are talking heaters most people will use it on occasion or part of the day right into the end of April as you’ll still be getting single digit temps at night/early morning. The same is probably true for early November on the other side of the season.
