Urgently need to move to Japan with my wife who was born in Japan but later became an American Citizen as an adult. Quickest way to do this?

I’ll try to make this brief. My wife and I need to move to Japan permanently because of some serious family issues.

Wife – born in Japan > Moved to America as an adult > Became an American Citizen

Me – born in America and have only been an American Citizen my whole life. No college degree.

What is the quickest way to make this happen?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you.

  2. Well, she should be able to get a Child of Japanese National visa. Not sure if she can sponsor your visa with it though.

You will probably have to gain your own access to permission to stay long term. Go back to college and get a degree in IT, that way you can either get hired by an company for IT work or fall back on English teaching.

She should really be talking to the nearest Japanese consulate to you as they can help guide her in everything needed.

  3. Your wife should apply for a child of a Japanese national status of residence. Details here:
    https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/applications/status/spouseorchildofjapanese02.html?hl=en

For yourself I feel like long term resident is probably the correct status to apply for. Details here: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/applications/status/longtermresident02_3.html?hl=en

But call your local Japanese consulate/embassy or national visa hotline (the number will be on the embassy webpage) to get their opinion.

  4. I’m in a similar situation, my wife was born in japan, although her parents were born in Brazil and her grandparents are Japanese.
Here we have a grandchild of japanese national and spouse of grandchild of Japanese national visa, allowing us to live and work.
check your consulate for similar conditions.

  5. Is your wife still a Japanese citizen? By the book, she is not, but practically speaking she may still be one. It’s easy for both of you if she’s still a Japanese citizen.

  6. Child of Japanese National. This is what my husband’s coworker had to do because his mom got sick

Do note that, when trying to find a place to live, she will be treated as a foreigner. Similar issues with opening bank accounts. It’s been a pain for him.
