How do you blow off steam?

I like to drive, it really helps me relax. But I’m wondering what other ways expats living in Japan blow off their steam.

  1. Meme answer: Strong Zero and a FamiMa cry.

Real answer: Also driving. Nothing like some twisties.

  2. I live in Tokyo, so driving at an average of 20km/h isn’t blowing much for me.

I’m interested in other answers though!

  3. I go to the gym in the morning and it helps relieve a lot of daily stress. It was hard to start going before work and waking up earlier, but once it was a habit it became harder to skip than to just go. I wake up at 6:45, get to the gym for 7, workout until 8:15 or so, head home, shower and get to work for my 9am start.

Bonus is you feel pretty great for the day, and the knowledge that the day is just starting but all your workout goals are already finished is a giant mental boon.

  4. >I like to drive, it really helps me relax.

Same here! Although I don’t have a car, so what I do is usually rent from Times for a couple hours then just drive around.

Other than that- go to the arcade, play some games on my PC, take my motorbike for a ride, or treat myself to a nice dinner.

I’m a social drinker, so I barely drink when on my own.

  5. Exercise like cycling, running, hiking, skiing and lifting weights. Onsen, sauna and cold baths are amazing too.

  6. hiking / sitting down in front of the river stream or go to the dirtiest and small random oden shop and talk with random drunken locals

  7. I go to Martial arts class in Seto, Nagoya. take me an hour bike 2 days a week and go to the closer gym the other days. cooking is also another way I like to blow off steam. when I was living in Australia, I’d go to BJJ class then smoke a hug blunt which would set off a chain off Uber eats events that only working out for the rest of the week could recover. I’m glad I don’t have access to weed here at all, otherwise, I’d be doing it again lol

  8. Playing guitar, painting miniatures, playing boardgames/wargames with the kids, studying theology/apologetics, dote on my wife, work on my yearly reading challenge.

  9. As I don’t have the money for a gym membership right now, I’m working on setting up a group that meets regularly at a park somewhere in Tokyo to play a game of volleyball. (If anyone in this sub is interested in joining, let me know!)

  10. Buying games I’ll probably never play on steam.

Also just walking in random directions until I’m tired helps sometimes.

  11. Walk while listening to comedy podcasts(especially political satire), splurge on favorite snacks from abroad (gotta stop this one), eat cbd mints or candies(when I’m beyond help), drink a glass of red while cleaning house or cooking(makes the work feel like fun), YouTube episodes of Escape to the Country (beautiful homes, idyllic settings, soothing accents), read books about other places or eras (currently reading nonfiction about the religious practices of ancient people in NorthernEurope, but I usually prefer fantasy or sci-fi) , burn scented candles while listening to nature sounds or classical music and just space out … my way of relaxing won’t suit everyone, but it’s working alright for me. Hopefully I’ll figure out even healthier ways of coping as time goes on.

  12. Workout at the gym, BJJ, reading and sex.

I work out almost every morning starting around 6am. I train 28 days a month on average and that makes me feel refreshed right after.

I also train BJJ 3x-5x/week and it makes me feel good. I read in multiple languages, eat good food every day, and finish my day by having fun at night…

  13. Mercari shopping for deals and then patting myself on the back for “saving” so much money
