Manga app for my kids

My oldest two, 12 and 9, enjoy manga. And for a year or so, I enjoyed taking them to BOOKOFF and choosing some 100¥ books. But now, it’s overflows everywhere. Bookshelves packed. Piled next to futon. Bathrooms. My car.

I would like to perhaps get an app for them. I wouldn’t mind a monthly fee.

Any of you have experience with Manga apps?

Can I put an age restriction so they can only access certain titles?

We have the major titles, ONE PIECE, Naruto, etc. They also enjoy the sports genre.

Any help appreciated

  1. It’s not paid for subscription, but I recommend Bookwalker, there’s an app for tablets and you can purchase manga digitally from their website, they also do a lot of sales and free samples/free vols for x time and their selection is massive.

  2. Local libraries have Manga you can borrow, and a lot of community centers that have after school programs often have the newest books just as they release, these are cheaper and less space taking alternatives.

  3. I’d give whatever app you go for a test run before giving it to your kids. While you can filter out adult contents “boys love” stuff seems to fly right through any filter I setup

  4. Buy a sub for shonen jump digital. You get access to lots of benefits as a member, such as advanced lottery for any SJ anime stage shows (gets you front of the house tickets)

I also am DEEP into Bookwalker, since I can get JP/ENG and lots of coins from specials so every so often I can get a bunch of books for free.

  5. Surely there’s a Japanese equivalent to Libby you can use in conjunction with a local library card, no?

Or even better, swap out the BookOff trips with a trip to said library. It’s probably better for their eyes than staring at a screen for hours on end.
