No National Company Insurance, is it illegal?

I left my job end of November and starting a new job mid-January next year in a new city. When I left, the company took back my company insurance card. I currently have no insurance since I’m waiting to start the new job in January. When I went to register my new address in the new city, the lady said it’s a rule that I must have insurance. I start my new job in about 5weeks and will only get insurance then. Is it illegal to spend sometime without insurance during this transition?

  1. Yes. You should sign up for NHI (national insurance) in the period when you’re not covered by the company.

If i remember correctly, in Japan, you will always be enrolled in health insurance regardless if you have the card on you or not. once you lose your company insurance, national health insurance kicks in automatically.

You still have to process it at city hall though to get your card
