What should I know about a Japanese Exchange program? Is one to Tokyo a good idea?

Heading closer and closer to college, I’ve started thinking about ticking off something on my bucket list—visiting Japan, to get some really good classic immersion. Not only do I think I’d love it, but it would help my language skills, I imagine quite a lot. There are some worries I have though, and this kind community seemed the best place to voice them.
The first is the location. I notice that many colleges have exchange programs to Tokyo, and in fact, many \*only\* have one to Tokyo. I don’t dislike Tokyo—I haven’t been there!—But I worry it won’t give me a feel for “real” Japan. As an American, I’d feel weird if someone went to New York and thought \*that\* was America. I don’t want to have an improper first impression of it.
Second, is the experience in general. I imagine there are a few people on this subreddit who’ve done an exchange program to Japan. How was it? Did you enjoy it? Did it help your language skills?
