I’m looking to buy some nice quality mens sweaters for Christmas gifts but I’m really not familiar with Japanese clothing brands. I’m not looking for designer brands but something better quality and more fashionable than anything like Uniqlo or GU. Can anyone suggest some stores/brands for me to look at?

Depends. Paul Smith isn’t Japanese but it’s considered a midtier luxury brand and is a good present.
If you’re looking for slightly above Uniqlo level though, just go to an Aeon Mall or LaLaport and check out any of the men’s stores.
You could try [BEAMS](https://www.beams.co.jp/category/tops_01/)
Sweaters range from pricey to not bad.
Beams, United Arrows, one of their sub brands depending on your budget
If your family isn’t Japanese or Asian don’t buy it, it really won’t fit well. Otherwise posters with Beams and UA are correct

Uniqlo is my brand name to go. GU is my average price. Shimamura for cheaper stuff. Sorry but out of my budget and knowledge.
Slightly expensive but I really recommend D/Him (Double Standard Clothing). They have a store in Seibu Shibuya.
Try Papa’s, pricey but usually well worth it. Good quality stuff.
Workman has you covered.
It basically comes down to whats your budget…
Muji can be pretty good. A lot my sweaters are from there. Comfy and 100% wool.
L.L. bean?
If the guy is on the small/thin side, Takeo Kikuchi has some pretty snappy stuff.
I’m not sure how Uniqlo 100% Merino wool cardigans can be improved
Beams is pretty nice . Mid tier good for nice quality
Auralee is quiet popular and is good quality, made in Japan too. CFCL has been on the rise recently and Visvim (but expensive) is nice too!
Try to look at Beams, united arrows, and nano universe
Montbell has high quality Japanese clothing that will last a lifetime.
Muji is a step up from uniqlo, I’m convinced it’s the same brand, but none the less the quality is nice
Ues if it’s denim or work shirts. Expensive but will last a life time.
L L beam and Uniqlo is not bad
TK(TAKEO KIKUCHI) would be good.
ASICS and Adidas 3 line stripes are always promising.
Patagonia or North Face (Check outlets)
A hope hemp!
Brycelands makes some fabulous knitwear and has really good values as a company. Prices are 30,000-50,000 yen.
If you like a classic/trad style, Maker’s Shirts Kamakura has some nice sweaters (and shirts). I believe that most of their clothing is made in Japan too.
For a higher price you may want to check out J. Press as well.
How much is your budget and what is his hobby? Perhaps you can buy clothing as per his hobby. If he is a dude who just play games at home, some nice comfy sweatpants or sweater will do. You can even buy him a video game instead.
If he likes hiking or trekking, some nice technical pants or a merino base layer will be appreciated. A softshell jacket would be nice but only if you have a budget for it
