I went to Japan in 2017, I believe. Right before they tore down the old fish market. I understand price increases over time, but this seems like quite a bit if a jump, from when ever the last increase was. But they also talk about reginal rail passes being cheaper, but it is much more confined and restricted on choices. And they even talk about going by plane within Japan itself being cheaper, than taking a train in certain circumstances. You’d really have to plan ahead to make the most use of it.

Honestly it’s not that significant of an increase and you’d be fine traveling regionally without it anyway. Right now the price hikes for non-tourists are further hurting residents’ wallets while foreign tourists enjoy the exchange rate.
Idk why I was downvoted this “announcement” is not only old news but OP seems unfamiliar with Japan’s travel and economics.
