Obtaining a Drivers License

I just moved to Tokyo and I don’t have a drivers license (22F), and am wondering if anyone has recommendations on driving schools to attend? I’ve done some research but I am a bit confused on the timeline to obtaining a license and would love some input. (My Japanese is only at N3, so I’d prefer english instruction if possible).

  1. This question gets asked at least once a week. Maybe start by searching the subreddit and reading some of the other threads, and then ask if you still have questions?

  2. I was very happy with Koyama Driving School in Futakotamagawa. I took 3 licenses there, regular motorcycle, large motorcycle and car. Everything always went smooth. Teachers were always nice and thorough. They offer Japanese, English or a mix of both which I did. Recommended.

  3. I did a local driving school entierly in Japanese and my Japanese isnt even N3. You can get the book used to teach from in English, to learn the rules etc. The classroom lessons are entierly reading the book and watching videos which have subtitles in English. Actually driving is simple because you spend so long on the school course before going on real roads. I picked up some simple vocab but out of context and using my eyes I worked out what they wanted me to do.

My point is, go to any local school or wherever is cheaper. Prices are seasonal and schools should have a yearly schedule with prices so you can see which months are cheapest.

    Good luck!
