American Student graduating early and hoping to move to Japan

Hi Everyone,

I’m graduating from my university in the US early (in March instead of June) and am hoping to spend three months in Japan before my job starts in July. I used to come to Japan a lot as a child and just came back from a two week holiday in the country with some friends and am certain that I’d like to do this.

I am hoping to live in Kyoto and enroll in an intensive Japanese course. I know how to read some Kanji due to taking Chinese for 9 years, but have just started Hiragana on Duolingo. Ideally I’d self study Japanese for the next three months, so that by the time I come to Japan in March, I’d be able to have the basics down already.

I could rent an apartment for my time here, but think it would be cool to live with a host family. Fortunately, money isn’t a huge issue in this case.

I would certainly appreciate suggestions and would love to discuss further with some of you through DMs.

Thanks so much

  2. This sub is more for people trying to permanently move to Japan. If you only want to come for 3 months, you can do that on a tourist visa.

I would just google language schools and find a decent one. And then do the same for house stays – although personally I would skip the formality of this and just stay at various AirBnbs (or Couchsurfing — unsure how big it is in Japan) that have good reviews for the sociability of the host. This will be infinitely less involved than applying to a formal house stay program.

Moving to Japan ≠ vacationing in Japan
