Best Japanese Books Read in 2023?

This year I made it a goal to read more books written by Japanese authors albeit translated in English. Mostly older ones. My highlight was definitely Shusaku and Shigeru.
Any good book you would recommend for my to be read list for 2024?

1) A Personal Matter (Kenzaburo Oe)
2) The Samurai/Silence (Shusaku Endo)
3) Lonely Castle in the Mirror (Mizuki Tsujimura)
4)Showa: A History of Japan manga (Shigeru Mizuki)
5) The Devotion of Suspect X/Salvation of a Saint (Keigo Higashino)
6)Confessions of a Mask (Yukio Mishima)
7)The Housekeeper and the Professor (Yoko Ogawa)
8) Snow Country (Yasunari Kawabata)

  1. Well controversial indeed but two of the best books I’ve read are both by Yukio Mishima.

    – Sun and Steel
    – Confessions of a Mask

Highly political and I can’t say I agree with all that he was trying to say but his style of writing is very intoxicating. It’s hard to describe.

An honorable mention for me is the aosawa killings by Riku Onda. Great thriller/Mystery.
