Mail-in request for credit card identity confirmation – normal?

Sorry for the weird title, but I applied and was approved for an Aeon credit card in August. I’ve been using it for a few months now. I applied in person and provided my indentity documentation, etc. I believe I also had to do an identity check for the Aeon app that tracks my credit usage. They know who I am.

Yesterday I received a letter from Aeon requesting mailed copies of my personal identity cards (zairyuu or other). Something like 情報確認ください。The paperwork includes a lot of English and seems to be directed at foreigners.

So, is this normal? It looks legit. But my gf applied for the same card at the same time and hasn’t received this letter. Is this a gaijin special?

  1. Will your visa end soon? If it’s the case, you are required to provide them with the proof of your new visa. If your visa is expired and you are renewing it, you have 2 months past the expiration of your visa to complete the procedure.

  2. I think it is pretty standard procedure here to the banks/card companies to get those information. I opened an online bank account and requested photo copies of residence cards and one other form of ID, health insurance, my number, etc by mail even though I submitted it by photo via their app.

  3. Normal. They can ask you to reconfirm your identity, address, etc, at any time. It’s most common closer to SOR expiry dates. If you don’t reconfirm your card will likely be frozen.

  4. I think they have to confirm the identity of all their foreign customers as part of the global lockdown on money laundering. It’s nothing personal.

  5. I’ve had my card for about 7 or 8 years but I also got the identical letter this week.

First time ever for me from any bank.
