It used to be everywhere but now it’s endangered species. When I was a kid in 90’s I knew a spot or two but distantly they’re gone from my neighborhood.
Though it still seems to be sold in summer festival for kids to bring home and raise. I can find them in fish tank at pet fish store everywhere.
Never heard a myth or stories related to them at all. There’s a song for kids about them though. (めだかの学校) I just know as a small fish were supposed to be able to find anywhere.
