Is Toshima city a good location if our primary goal is to consume rather than observe?

We booked a cheap $50 hotel in 3-31-10 Minamiotsuka, Toshima-ku, Tokyo but I’m concerned when looking at the area on google maps as there are keb-ab/mosque places nearby. It also seems nobody on this sub really talks about Toshima so maybe we should change the hotel to a better area. I wouldn’t mind paying more for a better location. We’re going for 4 days and just want to ea-t authentic sus-hi and ram-en and maybe see something/go to a b-ar/cl-ub in between. Wouldn’t mind copying someone’s itinerary if yours is fo-od oriented

  1. What’s wrong with kebab/mosque places being nearby?

I personally wouldn’t say Toshima is a problem. It’s got Ikebukkuro, and Shinjuku + Shibuya aren’t too far. You could go for a more central location (e.g. Chiyoda or Taito cities) but again, don’t think it would be a big issue.

I also don’t understand why you have chosen to hyphenate ce-rtain wo-rds

  2. Nobody talks about Toshima like nobody talks about Taito or Chiyoda. Those wards are usually rather large and diverse. We talk about neighborhoods or districts, like Ikebukuro, Asakusa, Harajuku, etc.

Kebab places are all over Tokyo nowadays. Never seen anyone afraid of kebab before, though.

Also, what’s with all those das-hes?

  3. I just looked at the map near your hotel. The train line nearby is the JR Yamanote line which will make it convenient to get to basically anywhere tourist you want to go in Tokyo, and there is another Metro line too.

There is a single mosque and a single kebab shop nearby… not multiple as you are making it seem. I think you need to not focus so much on that. Believe it or not, Japan is a modern society. Tokyo has just about every cuisine you can imagine, kebabs included. Japanese people like kebabs and there is freedom of religion in Japan. It’s not inauthentic … it’s just what Tokyo is like.

If you do decide to change your neighborhood it should be so you can be closer to attractions and areas you are interested in since you are staying for just a short time. Not because you are afraid of some mosques and kebab spots.

I stayed in a neighborhood no one really talks about (Takadanobaba) and it was awesome. I’m sure you will have a blast. Enjoy your trip.

  4. I’m not sure what you’re worried about.

In Tokyo in general there are a a surprising amount of kebab places, curry places, naan places, etc.

Tokyo is a fairly big “melting pot” because there are a ton of foreigners who live there.

It’s not like those places existing forces you go to any of them.

  5. Tokyo is safe and easy to get around by public transport. There are ramen and sushi restaurants and bars everywhere. You’ll be fine.

  6. Toshima-ku’s crown and jewel is Ikebukuro. Ikebukuro is full of the NY equivalent of the bridge and tunnel crowd from Saitama. From Tokyo standards, it’s full of trashy hicks.

  7. I suppose kebab and mosque indicate poor and crime ridden neighborhood in your country. But Tokyo is not segregated like that.

Like the biggest mosque in Tokyo is located in Yoyogi Uehara. It’s a rather upscale neighborhood with a lot of rich residents.
