I would imagine that it requires more energy to heat the water to a higher temperature. Regardless of temp, to save money we leave our hot water turned off unless we’re actively using it (as we aren’t in a place where pipes might freeze)
Most if not all heaters in Japan are instant. Meaning, it will only start heating up when the pipe is turned on/ water is running. So no electricity is used if the pipe is not running and or is set to cold. Higher temps mean more energy used though.
