Help a newbie identify this sushi please! Got it in a seasonal sushi platter. Tasted very different, like densely packed mini cod roe?

  1. It’s kazunoko as someone already said. I usually avoid this one tbh. It’s ok once in a while.

  2. Was it crunchy!? I had something like this in small pieces in a sushi bowl in Japan and have been trying to figure out for months.

  3. At first I thought it was Sujiko, worst thing I’ve ever eaten. Kazunoko is correct as others have said. Not bad, but not a fan of the texture.

  4. Oh thank you OP for creating this post! I finally found the long lost sushi that i always ordered. It is crunchy and kinda pops in your mouth. Been unable to find this anymore. Does anybody know which sushi places serve this? Together with herring meat itself not just the roe on its own.

  5. Thank you for posting! I had this years ago and didn’t like to but also didn’t catch the name. Now I know what it is so I don’t order it again.

  6. It’s herring roe.
We often eat on the new year day(1st Jan) with osechi.
The food is used to pray for the birth of many children.

  7. yo dawg, thats just lemon skin on rice, you got swindled!

    jk, its defintely herring roe/kazunoko

  8. I normally just buy the salted Kazunoko in the supermarket and snack on it plain (because they normally make it really salty).
