Therapist recommendations for LGBTQ+ Japanese

Hi, everyone.

I’m looking for recommendations for Japanese psychotherapists/counselors in Tokyo. Online therapy might also be fine.

This is for a **Japanese** gay man who’s unimpressed by the state of psychology and psychotherapy in Japan in general.

We know about TELL, though it can get quite expensive, and we understand they mainly work in English. He can speak English, but being able to communicate with the therapist in his native language would be much more comfortable and productive for him.

Extra points if it’s someone familiar with LGBTQ+ issues.

Any positive experiences?

Thank you!

  1. Sorry I don’t have better information but I’ve heard on this subreddit that TELL actually offers help in Japanese too (not sure if it’s a different number completely?) They might be able to direct you or your friend to some resources in Japanese if they can’t be of help themselves.

  2. Not to be rude, because I know it can be hard to find good mental health professionals, but if he’s a native speaker then he would probably have better luck searching in Japanese.

Maybe he could try to find psychologists that have studied or completed research abroad?
