  1. How do Japanese people do air quotes? In English we do it with two fingers to mimic the ” shape, but it occurs to me that Japanese brackets are shaped like box corners instead.

  2. Is there a point where it all starts to click?

I am around an N5 level and for the most part understand basic conversations. I know around 200 kanji and can read easier articles decently well. I have a decent understanding of the grammar. I have been studying seriously for about 8 months.

However, I feel like when I do understand a sentence, I am “translating” it and I don’t really have a “feel” for the meaning of what is being said.

Is there a point where this feeling of the language starts to click?

Hopefully this isn’t too vague and you all understand what I mean. I feel like I am forever on the verge of understanding what is being said.

    Thanks!
