Learning Beginner Japanese for a trip in 5 Months

Hi everyone,

A friend and I are thinking about learning a tiny bit of Japanese in advance of a 1 week trip we’re doing in May. I don’t have any illusions about learning a useful amount – I’m mostly

He has a little bit of experience already, and I am probably around a B2 in Spanish, except for my speaking. I think it’d be great if during the vacation I could say a common list of phrases, and occasionally read some signs and go “That’s cool! I know what that means!”

With Spanish, I liked having the goal of getting to a certain DELE level – for Japanese, I understand there’s N1-5. I think it’d be great to try to get to N5 as an achievable goal, even if it isn’t practically useful in any way. I’ve read that Genki would be a good suggestion for learning some basics of the language, would that be sufficient for an N5 level?

Otherwise, I’d like to get a phrasebook. I already use Anki for Spanish, so I’d probably co-opt that to learn those phrases, as well as Hiragana, Katana, some first grade Kanji, and some important signs (like Tokyo, bathroom, etc).

Does anyone have any other recommendations? Thanks!
